List of recommended picture framers

Recommended traditional and online framers - by location

View a list of framers who are recommended by artists who have used them - on the artist's website or blog.

CONTENTS:

List of Recommended Picture Framers in
  • the UK (London and Counties)
  • Ireland
If you care about the picture framer you use and want to see them stay in business you can recommend them using the form at the bottom of the page.

Your recommendation will only be listed if you have a specific recommendation on your website or blog.

How to recommend a framer

You are welcome to add your own RECOMMENDATIONS to this list - by completing the form at the bottom of this page.

Leave your name, your email address, the name and location of the framer and a link to the URL where I can see the explicit recommendation online by a named individual who is a practising artist.

No online recommendation means a framer cannot be added to the list. (It's my way of exercising quality control)

Please note framers cannot recommend themselves!
I only accept:
  • recommendations from artists and
  • only if they have a recommendation on their website or there is an authentic article in which they are quoted as recommending a framer.

I'm happy to add groups of framers - a "strictly for information only" basis BUT ONLY IF they have a competent and accessible website where customers can review what framers have to offer

Please note: This is a sharing exercise. I accept no liability for the recommendations of others. If you have any queries about the framer please contact the artist who recommended them.

Different types of framers - traditional and online

Framers are listed in two different ways:
  • traditional vs online - Some people prefer the face to face experience while others have limited time and/or don't have the option of a great local frameshop!
  • geographical location - I'm also developing the list on a geographical basis because let's face it there's a limit to how far most people want to go to visit a framers!
Below I describe the difference between ordering frames from a traditional frameshop and via a website.

Traditional Frameshops (T)

Online Framers (O)

Traditional framers are designated by letter T after their name below

The traditional version of a framer is one you visit with your artwork and discuss what options are available for presentation and display of your artwork.

Once you've decided on a style of framing for your artwork, subsequent visits can be more straightforward in terms of generating an estimate for the work.

In brief:
  • You review the mouldings and matboards that the framer has in stock. Sometimes he has samples of mouldings he can order in - but this can create a delay in delivery of frames to you
  • The framer measures your artwork and you debate dimensions for the framed work.
  • You are given a price for the job - based on measured dimensions and choices of materials - and then decide whether or not to proceed.
  • If you do, the framer makes up the frames and you come back later to collect them.
  • Depending on where you live, there might be quite a bit of time and travelling involved.
Online framers are designated by letter O after their name below

Online Framers are ones you can use irrespective of where you live. They're a great option if you've not got a great local framer and/or not got a lot of time for travelling to see framers and then pick up frames. Plus some people like to spend a bit of time considering their options and in my opinion it's easier to do this online rather than standing in a frame shop.

In brief:
  • You can spend as much time as you like looking at different options for frames and mats online
  • you provide all relevant dimensions online (so an option which works only for those who are careful measuring)
  • You select frames and mats online.
  • Frames are then made and dispatched to wherever you live. You need to be able to provide a safe place for them to be delivered to.

Recommended Picture Framers
in the UK

On this page you will find a list of framers who have been highlighted by the artists who have used them on their websites.
  • This list is updated every time an artist tells me about or specifically recommends their framer (online - on their website or blog)
  • It will grow as more people become aware of this list and want to add their framer.
  • Use the form at the bottom of the page to recommend a framer and provide the information and links requested.
KEY:
(T) = traditional framer
(O) = Online framing available
(V) Vintage frames available

NOTE: Some framers are "Trade Only".
This generally means they will only do orders for professional artists (eg multiple frames for an exhibition) and do not always do customised one-offs - but you can always ask.

I have been using the Picture Frames Express service for a few years as I find it very convenient to order online and then have them arrive ready made to fit my pictures. I have been satisfied with their service. The website is easy to use. I think that one can ask for the holes to be made for the screws. That is not automatically done, and was the only bit I found fiddly.
