about art for artists

Why you can be more than self-employed!

8/6/2020

Every time you describe your employment status on your Facebook account as "self-employed" you miss out on an opportunity to
  • redirect people to a Facebook Page which has YOUR name on it
  • which is marketing YOUR art - and
  • gathering in sales and commissions for YOU.
Just a thought!

Why not have an account which
  • reads"Works at "YOUR NAME ART" and
  • links to YOUR brand new FB Page?

Facebook Page

You must have a profile to create a Page or help manage one.
Pages are places on Facebook where artists, public figures, businesses, brands, organizations and nonprofits can connect with their fans or customers.
To find out more about Facebook Pages read:
  • What's the difference between a profile, Page and group on Facebook?
  • Why should I convert my profile to a Facebook Page?
It's against the Facebook Terms to use your profile to represent something other than yourself (example: your business), and you could permanently lose access to your account if you don't convert it to a Page.
  • Create and Manage a Page
    • If you choose a Page, you can have an unlimited number of people follow you rather than the limit of 5,000 friends of your personal account
    • When you're trying to represent your art business, and promote your art you can do this better from a Page Facebook, create a Page. A Page lets you engage with people on Facebook and offers tools to help you manage and track engagement.
    • choose which type of page you want according to the features available - see the table below. Artists should choose the Business or Brand page.
  • How do I create a Facebook Page?
  • Manage Page Settings  - Make sure the username you're trying to create follows the guidelines for custom username
  • Customise a Page - including profile and cover photos, categories and templates, page details, call to action buttons
  • In due course you may want to create a Facebook Page Shop - see below....

Bear in mind that Facebook is currently also gearing up to expand Facebook Page Shops - which allows you you sell your art online from home.

3 solutions for a 1* Facebook Review that undermines your organisation

2/8/2016

Is it fair for Facebook to allow somebody to give a 1* review rating to an arts organisation - like an art society - when that individual has based their assessment on 3rd party comments by other people made some time ago? I've seen this happen on the Facebook Page of an art society.

How to tackle a 1* Facebook Review

People can review and rate a local business organisation.
  • ratings can be from 1* to 5* and contribute to an overall rating which shows on the Facebook Page
  • ratings can be left without a review but a review cannot be published without a rating.

There are three things an art organisation can do to respond to bad review given by somebody who has no personal knowledge of your organisation.
  1. Change the category of your Facebook Page
  2. Report the review for failing to follow Facebook's Guidelines
  3. Identify the issue to your supporters - this always comes last and should only ever be employed if the first two fail to tackle the issue.

#1 SOLUTION: Change your category

There's no limit to the number of times that you can change the category of your Page.
The first thing you need to do is think very seriously about the category your organisation falls into.

If your arts organisation or society has the status of a "Local Business" on facebook this then permits reviews. Your organisation might want to think twice about the category given that
  • people can provide reviews without any personal knowledge of you (i.e. it's up to you to prove to facebook that they have no knowledge of you - which might not be easy!)
  • your organisation CANNOT DELETE those reviews (and you also risk getting a lot of spam left in the reviews section - never mind negative reviews!)
  • if not many people review you the negative reviews linger long on your Facebook Page - and affect its overall rating.

So - ask yourself the questions:
  • Does your arts organisation really need to have the category of a "Local Business"?
  • Might the category of "companies and organisations" be more appropriate?
Personally I don't think "business" is the right category for an organisation like an art society unless that organisation knows it can generate lots of positive and spontaneous reviews.

Next you need to change the category.
  • How do I change my Page's category? is a Facebook Help Page which tells you how you can change the category for your arts organisation.
  • Look at the table below - from What features are available based on my Page's category? - to see which features you want. Note that ONLY "Local Businesses" have the ratings and reviews feature.
Picture

#2 SOLUTION: Report the review

Note that Facebook does not moderate reviews UNLESS they are reported.

You can report a review if it doesn't follow and comply with the
Facebook Guidelines for Reviews.  So you need to report a Review that is clearly not based on personal experience.

This is what the
Guidelines for ratings and reviews has to say.
Ratings and reviews must follow the Facebook Community Standards, focus on the product or service offered by the Page and be based on personal experience. Reviews that don't follow these guidelines may be removed.

What are the guidelines for ratings and reviews?

#3 SOLUTION: Identify the issue to your supporters

For me this last option should only ever be implemented as a response if both the other solutions have failed to address the issue,  That said, if your organisation has opted for reviews then you need to make sure that those who are positive about you can leave a review!

The only thing that changes the impact
of a negative review on the overall rating is lots of more positive reviews.

Anyone logged into Facebook can post ratings and reviews. People can post a rating without including a review, but you can't post a review without a rating.

You can identify the opportunity to leave ratings and reviews to your supporters. For example:
  • members of an art society are entitled to talk about their experience as a member
  • visitors to an exhibition might like to comment on whether they enjoyed it or not

NEW Facebook Page - Art Business for Artists

1/5/2016

Picture
Yesterday I 'soft' launched a NEW Facebook Page associated with this website.

You can find it at https://www.facebook.com/artbusinessforartists/ Before I formally announced it had some 60+ likes. Since going public earlier this afternoon it has now got over 200 likes in its first 24 hours.

The rationale behind the new Page is explained in Making A Mark on Art Business and Marketing.

In summary - the intention is that this should provide an easy of keeping up to speed with interesting news and updates about matters relating to:
  • the art business
  • marketing in real space and online
  • techie matters about the law, money, tax and being online.
The content will include posts by me and will also share posts by others. However the content will always be focused on the type of topics indicated above.

Some of what you see on the Facebook Page will also be the subject of posts on this blog. Some items will relate to new links and updates to the website.

Bottom line - it's a different way of keeping up to date with what's happening - and the speed of change in the environment in which artists have to operate these days.

If you have a Facebook account and you'd like to keep up with it you can link to it by 'liking' the page. It should then appear in your news feed - and will continue to do so if you regularly indicate an appreciation of what is posted.

(Note about how Facebook works: If you just look and do nothing then chances are it will disappear from your news feed in time. Your Facebook news feed is always configured to present you with information you like looking at and respond to!  It does NOT contain every new item on every page you have ever liked.)

How to share your Facebook Page in a Facebook Group

22/12/2015

If you have ever found it difficult to share your Facebook Page try this work around.
  • Go to your personal account (i.e. it's ESSENTIAL that all actions are performed while you are in your personal account - the image for your personal account must stay in the top menu line all the way through this process)
  • Put the name of your page in the search box - and select/click it when it comes up. This takes you to your page but as a visitor from your account rather than as the owner (Below I'm searching for my Facebook Page 'Making A Mark' from my personal Facebook account)
Picture
Select your Facebook Page from the search results
  • Next click the three dots to the right of 'message'. This generates the drop down menu. Go down the list until you find "Share" and select/click this option (below I've shown the drop down menu below the three dots)
Picture
  • When you click on share a menu popup box opens up and shows you your options for the different places you can share your Facebook Page (subject to the limitations created by your target). Hence you can share on your own timeline (e.g. announcing the creation of your page) or you can share in a group or on another Page you manage
Picture
  • If you want to share in a Facebook Group you first need to identify the name of the group next to where it says 'Group Name'. This assumes you have first checked the rules of the group to see if it is OK to share. Do NOT assume it's OK as sharing without permission might get you expelled from a group!
  • Next write a message about why your are sharing - for example, in an Introduction thread where people are allowed to post their Facebook Pages say who you are, what you do and how long you have had your Facebook Page. Then publish the post - and that's it!
Picture
The same process also applies if you are posting:
  • on your own timeline
  • on a Friend's Timeline
  • or on another Page you Manage.
