Do you know the difference between different types of Hanging Hardware? Are you using the right type of hanging hardware for the size and weight of your artwork? Below is a picture of the stock of hanging hardware carried by Green & Stone who I visited last week at their new shop in the Fulham Road. I remembered they have this brilliant board which indicates the type of hardware they stock and the different sizes (and associated prices). One rarely sees anything like this (except in excellent hardware stores) and I asked if I could take a picture of it for the "how to hang a picture" page on this website. You can see how the hanging hardware gets progressively larger and more robust as it increases in size for larger / heavier artwork. (see my webpage to see some pics which illustrate more common arrangements for common sizes of artwork) The board below includes:
It's always a good idea to get the experts to recommend the best size of hanging hardware for the size and weight of your picture If you right click it, it'll come up bigger than you can see below.

My profound apologies to those who visited yesterday, clicked the link to the List of recommended picture framers and got a 404 page instead! The link had been changed - or so I thought - to the revised URL, but obviously the change had not 'taken'.
Yesterday's blog post Starting a list of recommended picture framers has now been revised so it now has a proper live link. Plus the one above also works! Hopefully that will mean that some of you can now share the framers you like and can recommend? Have you ever wanted to know who are the framers recommended by other artists? Me too! I also believe in the wisdom of crowds! So today, I've created a new page on my website - List of recommended picture framers. This creates a space to record those framers who have been specifically recommended by artists who have used them - on the artist's website or blog. Read on to find out how you can help expand the listing. How to recommend a framerThis is going to be a long slow sharing exercise and I don't expect it will get long overnight!
However if you'd like to recommend and share the name of a framer you have used this is what you need to do.
I will then review the recommendation and if it does what I ask then the name of your framer will be added to the list As will any framers I notice being recommended by artists on their websites or blogs. I've created a new section on this website devoted to how to frame and hang art. It provides a home for information, advice and tips and techniques - and links to more of the same - about different aspects of matting, framing and hanging artwork - including:
To date it has two sub-pages:
I've also been writing quite a lot on my main blog about framing art in recent months.
