One of my clients used File Maker Pro to create a database for her art. It was infinitely customizable but incredibly hard to learn how to use. It's not made for art specifically, but is a database system for anything you need a database for. There are also lots of developers who are experience with it and offer services to make the software talk to other programs. So conceivably you could connect it to your ecommerce software or your accounting software or all sorts of things like that.

I am interested in what software you come up with for non-cloud, ie computer based Mac Artists. I am not a fan of subscription based software for Artists since I don't believe that most Artists generate enough income from their work to support all the services offered to them in the cloud.

I recently switched from File Maker to ArtMoi Studio after seeing this article a few months ago and it is SO MUCH EASIER.

I own a small art gallery in a highly-visited tourist zone that will be up and running within 6 months. I will be displaying no more than 5 product lines, and no more than 50 items at any given time. Only one employee (me). Any suggestions on the best art inventory management software to use?

I'm interested in a software that I can inventory my tools, materials, books, and artwork in case of an emergency situation. Does anyone have a suggestion for this? It seems like File Maker is the way to go, but I was wondering if there was something more user friendly? I would also like to have a dual storage situation where I can store this onto a hard drive as well as have access remotely through a cloud. This may just take a combination of software.

Disappointed that this needed page is not available before I must commit to learning Filemaker or whichever frugal computer-based option seems better. I am in a very similar position to Mary Ahern (comment above)with overlap to others because I am making/sharing art, have a brick-and-mortar gallery and am now embarking on an expansion to provide a nature-based creative experience as a non-profit. I will check back to see if your research confirms my own. An efficient and effective and inexpensive organizational program would help so many artists.

Thank you so much for instigating this research, Katherine! Very helpful. It seems that there are a plethora of art cataloguing options to choose from.

Lobus offers a free (no trial) cloud-based artist inventory management tool but it’s by invitation only–– full time working artists. They have an artist liaison but you can reach out via their main site at http://lobus.io/
